Angry vsftpd Connection Refused Errors

I just recently installed Red Hat 9.0 and am new to Linux with limited previous UNIX experience.

When I do ftp sforsgren-linux-01, I get:

ftp: connect: Connection refused
ftp>

So, it appears that ftp is running, however, I am not sure why it is refusing the connection. I did some research here already and I did have my firewall set to medium and changed to allow incoming FTP. That did not work. For now, I totally disabled the firewall, and that still did not seem to help.

What else should I check to see why it is refusing connections? I see no messages in /var/log/messages.

Also, what is it that starts the FTP service to begin with?

Thanks in advance!

Wanted to provide an update. I thought that vsftpd was started by default but it was not. When I start it, I now get my banner message back instead of connection refused, but I see this in /var/log/messages:

Apr 26 17:41:01 localhost vsftpd: true startup succeeded
Apr 26 17:41:17 localhost vsftpd: warning: can't get client address: Bad file descriptor
