Vocal problems with audio

I have a problem with my laptop, for once everything is working properly, which isn't the problem, but something that is vaguely annoying is that it is hard to hear vocals on music and videos. I normally use rhythmbox for my music because I find it better to have a library than playlists, but I have tried fiddling around with the equaliser settings on XMMS as well.. nothing seems to work, I can hear the music, and if I'm lucky, depending on the song, sometimes some of the words. I have no idea what I can do, any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance for your time
