vnstat -l reports no network traffic

But when I run the same command with sudo it does.

The same happens with other live traffic monitoring tools like bwm-ng

At first I thought it was something wrong with the apt-get install, so I downloaded the latest build from github and still have the same issue.

Any ideas what's going on?

No idea since we don't see any OS / restriction diagnostics. Kind of "brute force" but maybe start with '/usr/bin/strace /usr/bin/vnstat -l;' as unprivileged user and see what ENO.* messages you get? (Or post full output if unsure?)

Thanks unSpawn!
It's been a while since I've used Linux so just started getting back into it.

So I ran the command, and there seem to be a few ENO.* messages, but nothing that doesn't happen on my other working system that I noticed.
The only diff I could see is that it tried to read the data in /proc/net/dev but gets all 0's (even when I cat it, but it does return data when run as root)

Here is the strace output http://pastebin.com/kdQATAD8

Also the permissions of /proc/net/dev are:
Code:
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 22 22:29 /proc/net/dev
I'm on Debian 8.6

Edit: (solved)
Ok, so it's a kernal issue, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8...d-proc-net-dev
Issue is now resolved after I installed the default kernal, linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64, set it to boot from it and rebooted the box.
