Vmware + bcom anyone?

Has anyone managed to get battlecom running in win98 in vmware in linux?

I installed Win98 on my vm, followed by DirectX8, but (stupid me) forgot to make a copy of the clean Win98 install before installing DirectX8. Now I installed BattleCom but it performs an illegal operation as soon as I tell it to determine if my computer can run bcom. I don't really trust DirectX8, but have no way to uninstall it other than reinstalling everything.

If this sounds familiar to anyone or if there's anybody who got past this first wizard of BattleCom, please let me know.

Thanx

I already tried wine before and that's even worse.

Here's the current status of my tries with VMWare:

I now get past the wizard (turned out the soundcard always starts not installed in VMWare. whoops =] ). I also can see (by using the sound recorder) that the microphone is working. But when I start up a test session VMWare bails out saying:

"VMWare Workstation PANIC:

BUG F(553):919 bugNr=4410"

It happens some time (couple of seconds) after the session has started and before I have said anything.

I'm just gonna do some more tests, but if anyone has some extra information about this it would be appreciated.

Edit: Here is some more info:

After starting up bcom, everything is still ok. Then I start up the test session and halfway through connecting I start getting these:

Nov 04 13:17:42: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:42: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:42: dsp write error 9

Then I'm connected for a couple of seconds (while still getting those write errors) and then:

Nov 04 13:17:50: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:50: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:50: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:50: dsp write error 9
Nov 04 13:17:50: BUG F(553):919 bugNr=4410
Nov 04 13:17:50: Msg_Post Error: msg.log.panic
VMware Workstation PANIC:

BUG F(553):919 bugNr=4410
