Maybe mount your WinXP drive in Linux with Samba?

mount -t smbfs -o username=Administrator,password=password //windows_box_name/C$ /mnt/disk

Or, if you have a spare hard drive, set up VMware to use it in "raw mode" and install Linux on it. Use the Ext2 filesystem, then use Explore2fs in Windows to access the Linux partitions.

It might be simpler when you are installing Linux to put a small FAT32 partition between Windows and Linux. It would do what you were mentioning a floppy would do and without special configurations, new software or trying to write to an NTFS partition (very bad idea).
