Does anyone have VMWARE TOOLS correctly configured on Redhat 9?

I have gcc installed. I have VMTOOLS installed. But when I run vmware-config-tools, it complains that no "vmhgfs" module is suitable for my running system. It asks to compile it, but then complains it cant find the source code include directory.

This is a pain - has anyone solved it?

I have the Answer!

OK, getting VMWARE Tools working with Redhat 9. The trick is to download VMWare V4.01 from the VMWare site. It sorts the problems out.

challinor,

I have vmware tools (4.0.0 build 4460) running properly in Red Hat 9. I ran into the same problem as you...no compiler and no C headers (source code) installed.

I ignored the vmware install directions and used the graphical installer for RH9...it worked. I then had to install both the "development tools" and kernel source code RPMs. After that I booted to the command prompt and ran the vm configuration tools. It was able to find the compiler and C headers and compiled a new drivers for me. So far everything looks good. I believe that the vm ware toolbox should be running while Linux is running in GUI mode (after it has been installed and configured properly).

VM Ware should mention that a c compiler and source code needs to be installed along with Linux just in case the latest SVGA drivers don't work with the Linux kernel being installed. Sheesh.

Anyway, I hope this can help anybody in some way. It took me a long time to get this set up myself!

p.s. Where is VM 4.01? I don't see it anywhere.

VMWARE 4.01

I found that the latest VMWARE Workstation at VMWARE was actually Version 4.0.1 Build 5289.

This solved all my problems for me. I simply installed this, and when I rebooted and started the Linux guest OS, I reinstalled the VMTools. One thing to note for newbies, you must run the install with XFree86 disabled. So, my sequence was:

1) Uninstall your current VMWare
2) Download and install the latest VMWare.2
3) Reboot
4) Start up Linux (I boot into GUI mode)
5) Enable Linux Tools (Menu->File). This loads a CD image with compressed file.
6) Open the CD icon that appears, Open the file. It wil read the contents, much like WinZip does.
7) Extract the tools, simply click on the file that appears in the contents window, press extract, and select /root/ as the destination.
8) Now the magic: open up a terminal, and enter the command "telinit 3". This will shutdown XFree86 and leave you with a good old command line.
9) Login again, and cd /root/vmware-tools (I think thats it, but you can find it easily with ls).
10) Start the install off: ./vmware-tools-install.pl
11) Answer all questions (press return, thats all I did, to accept the defaults).
12) When it completes, "use telinit 5" to get back to graphical mode.

Hope this helps someone.

Adrian....

dear gurus;
hope my newbie karma finds answers here

i've been trying to find posts concerning the installation of Vmware 4.0.1-5289 for rh9 (2.4.20-19.9). My problem is similar as i can read above, but, honest, i need a fool-proof guide on how to find the gcc path that i'm asked when running vmware-config.pl.
from 'locate gcc' i find these 2 directories:
/usr/bin/gcc
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/3.2.2

however, the script tells me it's not an existing dir, or "The path "/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/3.2.2" is an existing directory,
but it does not contain at least one of these directories "linux", "asm", "net" as expected'.

the vmware documentation doesn't really explain this kind of issues, and to my best understanding from redhat documentation, i may need to compile the kernel? and create a link!?? shut! doesn't sound that easy...

now: i notice kernel 2.4.20-20.9 is outhere, and before upgrading mine, should i take advantage of this and make the pertinent vmware changes?

hope i can get help here! sorry but i really need to run those damn MS Office apps...

thank you!
