What sort of virtual directories? What software etc. We can't read minds you know.

I want to enable users to use htaccess.htaccess files in their directories.

I'm using PHP Version 4.3.3

I can't see what php has to do with anythign. To allow htaccess directives you need to appy hte correct AllowOverride attributes to the users directories in httpd.conf
