How would i give a linux partition from windows xp?

You can't. Windows only supports it's own file system. It can't mount a ext2/3 or reiserfs partition.

Ideally you could use a shared FAT32 partition - however, as a starting point you might want to check out:

explore2fs

I use one called Ext2Fsd. You can read ext3 and read/write to ext2. I forget where I got it but surely you can google for it.
