Video formats - pls help

Could anyone tell me what are the the most popular video formats natively supported by Linux? I've seened that .avi or .mpg/.mpeg are not supported in linux, I have to install certain player after.
I already got all my mp3's converted into ogg vorbis format and now I want to convert all my movies to a supported linux format. Can you help me?

best regards,
adrianno2

wouldn't it be easier to install the codecs? install mplayer or vlc player, they'll play pretty much everything

I don't want everytime I reinstall my Linux to "pimp" it so it could play mp3's or avi's

As far as I'm aware, XviD is an open source version of DivX, so if you're stuff's encoded in XviD, then you're already half way there :)

Xvid Source: http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/...e-1.1.0.tar.gz

.avi is just a container type for video which can be formatted with a number of different codecs, including DivX, XviD etc. Incidentally, most distributions (exluding RedHat/Fedora and SUSE I think?) include mp3 support out of the box (Slackware certainly does).

Whether your distro (RedHat?) supports certain video and audio codecs out of the box is down to luck to a certain extent :)

ogg theora is probably supported out of the box, not sure though

it's not pimping, it's installing a package. and it's also easier to do that than to convert an entire collection.
