VI (elvis) not working with URXVT terminal - termcap problems. Any (easy) solutions?

I should add that it does not work with any of the terminal emulators (e.g. xterm) since it has a problem with termcap.

It doesn't crash - it just stays in ex mode.

In other words it has become just a line editor.

My problem is that I know nothing about termcap et al, and from what I read it is quite a difficult thing to mess around with.

Is there any fix?

(needless to say I work now with Vim which, strangely, is not effected by this problem.
