VI: Alternative to ESC ?

I find myself switching between command and insert mode quite often, and find it quite a pain to have to jump my finger up to the ESC key everytime I want to switch out of insert mode.

Are there any other ways to exit out of command mode, excluding Escape ?
Is this something I could possible customize ?

I type pretty darn fast, I have semi-stubby fingers, and a laptop.... which is a horrible escape key combination

Any insight would be appreciated !

hi there,

i don't know if it is a solution but my suggestion is:
change the keyboard map. in my case i use the following in my .vimrc
Code:
imap ,, <Esc>
then you just type twice comma and you are out...

[edit] my bad !! i think what i wrote is not valid with "vi". Works only with "vim". If you use "vi", just ignore... sorry!

Thanks Slackie1000 !

Funny thing happened... I added that line to my .vimrc, and while tapping ,, twice didn't work ( i believe my vi cmd is aliased to vim), I tried (ALT + comma), which worked.

So, I then removed that line from my .vimrc, and it still works

Ha ! So, I guess (ALT + comma) is already an alternative for Esc ?
Craziness !

Thank you very much for your post... I wouldn't have stumbled across this without it !
