vgetty mgetty won't answer the phone

Distribution: SuSE 8.1 Professional

I've got my modem working as I can send faxes, print to faxes, and work with the modem in minicom. I can send faxes with efax via the command line.

I'm trying to get vgetty to work so I can use my Linux box for voicemail and to receive faxes. I've even downloaded Webmin to configure vgetty the easy way.

mgetty/vgetty won't answer the phone when it rings. Can anyone assist with troubleshooting advice and where I should be looking to solve the problem?

The modem is a U.S. Robotics Sportster 33600 FAX/Voice Int. I know it works for voicemail as the computer is dual boot XP / SuSE and I have voicemail in XP.

I know this rticle is Debian based but the principles should be the same and will probably give a guide to you.

TigerOC,

Thanks for the article. I've read several articles along these line and it helped to reinforce some knowledge about entries in the inittab file. I'm new to Linux and I'm enjoying the learning experience

The article didn't really help solve the specific problem of mgetty/vgetty not answering the phone when it rings. So I'm still looking for Guru guidance on the topic.

It's all about the leanring experience and the friendly Linux community helping one another. TigerOC helped me re-think the problem. So I got back on the Interned and used different search words for vgetty and voicemail.

I found this site: http://www.vocpsystem.com/

They have a pre-built voicemail system which I'll probably use because it looks pretty cool. But what they do have that I didn't find elsewhere are instructions on how to configure vgetty and mgetty from the command line, what the config files are and what those files do, plus much more information.

Looks like they have a great open source product. I can tell from reading their web site that they have good easy-to-follow and clearly written instructions for vgetty and mgetty.
