VFAT limitation on kernel 2.6

i notice that when i un-tar a source tarball file to vfat partition and all the uppercase file name in the tarball file will be turn into lowercase name. the file like INSTALL, README and etc will turn into install and readme.

i also notice that when i wanted to cut and paste (using kde konqueror interface) directery tree from ext3 partition which contain mixture of files and folders which in uppercase and lowercase file name will also be renamed into lowercase.

is this the limitation of VFAT driver for linux?

i'm running redhat 9, kernel 2.6.3 and setted fstab vfat partition to umask=000.

what is the problem here?

It is all just a matter of how it is displayed.

The limitation isn't with the kernel but with the fat file system itself. File names in Fat partitions are not case sensitive. So whether you display it as INSTALL or install matters not. You also can't have a file called INSTALL and a file called install like you could on a ext2/3. reiserfs, ect. ect. ect. partition.

I do not think so.
If I have mounted vfat partition I am able to create fales with filenames:
Hello
hELlo
but I am not able to create file with name HELLO, it is created as hello.
Where is the mistake?
