Hi...
and merry Christmas...
I posted this problem a few months ago and will try again. My problem is I can't use Pine anymore to send email. I get:
"mail not sent. sending error: 550.5.7.1 Authentication required"
I would like to fix this because I don't really like 'gui' mail programs. It worked fine when I had dial-up. I did a google for similar problems but there wasn't an answer that worked for me. Has anyone in this group solved this? Thanks very much in advance.
Neil
I assume you are using verizon's smtp server to send the mail as oppose to sendmail, correct? If thats the case, my guess is you need to provide your login to the smtp server. I am not familar with pine, but I know you have to authenticate to the verizon smtp server.
I have verizon dsl, and use mutt. I send using sendmail with no issues.

Netizen, tnx for the reply. You may be correct about using verizon's server. Is setting up sendmail pretty simple? I'm not sure what to do for authenticating the verizon server... the two won't conflict will they? I used mutt before when trying out a stripped version on slackware called basiclinux, based on slackware 3.5. Setting up the mail was easy with the basiclinux. I've looked into mutt again but I need to get this authentication problem solved. It seems to me slackware asks when you set it up if you want to use sendmail. I'll look to see if I can find it. Do you have any tips for sendmail?
