VB.NET Application in Linux


Hi All,

Is it prossible for linux to run an application that has been built by VB.NET.

Lets say i am going to implement an ubuntu linux on company computers to replace an existing windows, but at this time most of the application was write using VB.NET that run well on windows, so is it possible or i need to rewrite those application??

Hello,

You could always run it with wine or mono if need be, but yet I do recommend porting over your program to a linux platform.

how to porting those application? meaning rewrite it back using other language?

Yes. You are way better off just rewriting it into a linux based program for computers that are being switched to linux anyway, IMO.

Quite frankly, I don't see much business justification for making the attempt.

If you have "a piece of software that's important to your business," then what's important is that the program runs, smoothly. It really is okay to purchase a computer, and an operating system, just to run one particular application. (Or maybe to run it under Windows in a virtual machine.)

You're gonna blow a lot of time on this ... and, "time is money." Make sure that you have a business justifiable return-on-investment and an acceptable cost/risk analysis. I doubt that you will find that either one of these exists.
