using gzip command with php

Does any here knows how to use the gzip -9 with php.

This is what I am doing, but it seems to be not working? Does any here knows how to do it?
$dat = `date +"%F-%R"`;

$zip = `gzip -9 /var/www/html/logs/$dat.log`;
