USB Drives

What service needs to be running to see when a USB drive has been plugged in? I have done a fresh install of FC6 on a system and it is not detecting when a USB drive is plugged in. Even the device for it in /dev does not show up so it can not be mounted manually.

no clue about fedora but, generically, it should get picked up by udev, or hotplug on older setups.

I think it is the kernel's job to detect it.

I do notice recent kernels are pretty slick with it as the USB ports seems to be scanned periodically/constantly.

Normally after I plug in a USB drive, be it a hard disk or a memory stick, I would issue this command at the terminal
Code:
fdisk -l
I would say by tapping the direction key to repeat the terminal command about 3 times should be good enough to see the USB device reported. Many distros like the Slax family will have the USB disk shown immediately after the above command.

If the device name isn't appearing in the /dev directory then it may have to be created first but I never met a Linux that needs such help.

FC6 should be pretty quick in detecting USB devices as I have installed it into a USB drive before as reported here.

another thing that may be happening is the kernel may be detecting it, but not automatically mounting it. You may need to mount your USB device manually.
