Ok heres my question i know only a few internal "winmodems" can be run under linux, But what about the external us robotics winmodems out on the market today. Will they run (without all the tweaking id have to do with an internal) under linux?
Ok maybe i didnt make myself as clear as i should have. I do know the difference between a hardware modem and a software modem. I also know that some internal "winmodems" can run under linux and are known as linmodems such as PCTel, Lucent and ESS chipsets. I just wanted to know if the us robotics external winmodems(that is the actual name on the box) is actually a hardware modem.
Now that said i recently got of a site (i think modemhelp.com) that said that any external modem is linux compatable, but i wonder.
and the modems i am interested in right now are serial connected.
I didnt know there was any such thing as an EXTERNAL winmodem.
I have a 56k US Robotics external modem & it work's fine under linux (I didnt have to configure a thing)
This is the only specific I could find on the term "WinModem".
"While the name "WinModem" is specific to the US Robotics/3Com brand, it's become the vernacular for all internal, host- based modems (i.e., modems that use software and a machine's CPU to emulate a standard modem's hardware)".
Where can I find a reference to this "ExternalWinModem"?
Internal and external modems, both, can have dip switches. An internal modem with switches can be a hardware or possibly in some cases, both, hardware and software, though it's rare any more, with advances in modem software in conjunction with Win.
Besides, in this case I believe what your looking at is more of a nomenclature for the uninitated, that aren't cognizant of the fact that you can run Win with something other than a mfg.'s proprietary install. A selling feature, more than a finite description.
How do I know this modem will work in windows? It's says on the side of the box "WinModem".
