Upgrading the distribution and saving the user profiles/passwords

Dear All,

I am using FC5, and was considering an upgrade to FC6. However, I would like to save the user profiles, and want to avoid asking the users to change passwords. Could you advise me on the process to migrate users and passwords? Do I just move the home folders, /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files or would the hash values not match?

Help will be appreciated!

Since you're using the same distro, I would assume you can just copy directly the /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd/ and /etc/group file, along with the /home, and overwrite the originals. I'm sure there's some way to append the files , but I do not know how.

I read that you should FIRST copy the /etc/group file, then go ahead and copy the rest.

Thanks for the hints. I'll give it a try. -KRS
