Question upgrading or booting from secondary hard disk

Hi all,

I have search through LQ before asking this question. if this question is all ready answered please direct me to the source.

I would like to upgrade my old hard disk to a new hard disk as the old disk is more than 3 years old and has started to move slowly. The datas and application operating in this machine is very critical and i would not want to migrate to a diffrent machine as the cost will be high. migrating to a diffrent hard disk will be a better option.by the way the machine is on Redhat 9

partiton on old and to create on new disk the exactly same.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 8.7GB 234MB 8.0GB 3% /
/dev/sda1 502MB 14MB 462MB 3% /boot
/dev/sda3 7.3GB 1.1GB 5.9GB 15% /home
none 528MB 0 528MB 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sdb1 16GB 2.3GB 13GB 16% /usr
/dev/sdb2 2.5GB 86MB 2.3GB 4% /var

please help.

thank you

If I understand you correctly, you want to move your data/partitions from the old hard drive to a new hard drive. If this is the case and you're buying a retail hard drive, they usually come with software to handle this (well, at least Maxtor does).
If you don't have the software you can read this for some assistance.

http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/m...no/parted.html

BTW: the front-end for parted is Qtparted, also parted and qtparted is usually listed in the packages list of your distro, that is if it isn't installed already.

hi

thank you for the info, it will be usefull for me...but i have found other solution to solve the problem, have a look at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.

The problem is here the hard disks are sold in loose. so there is no specific manul or software. anyway thank you, i will use this method as an alternative....if there is any other way please do forward me the detail.

regards

trysten

The hard drive companies also offer their software as a free download. If you have the name of the hard drive and head on over to their website.
