Upgrading memory

I seem to recall an extra step required for Linux to recognize memory upgrades. I just added another 128MB to my machine (for a total of 256MB); I thought that I had to add "mem=256M" to my RedHat entry in lilo.conf, but when I try to re-run LILO, it chokes on that line.

Maybe that was just for Mandrake; I think I was running Mandrake when I read the tip about adding the mem line.

Anybody remember?

I believe that the ' m ' should be a capital ' M '. Like this append="mem=256M". If that doesn't work, you may have to reduce the memory by one:append="mem=255M"

This question seems to pop up a lot, but I seem to remember that you didn't need this as from the 2.2 kernels - can anyone else remember reading this? The last time I needed to use it was 2.0.x...

cheers

Jamie...

I had to do it using kernel 2.2.4

It's an issue with what the bios reports for ram. My older compaq server has a real screwy looking memory setup where you have to manually map the memory. It only auto-detects the 1st 16m... and the append command worked for me with both upper and lower case.
