Upgraded kernel and XFree86

I recently upgraded my kernel from 2.0.36 to 2.2.1 and also I upgraded my XFree86 from I dont know what to 4.0.1 in an effort to get my Voodoo3 card recognized. After lots of pain I finally have it recognized but my display is not configured properly.
Here are my three leads...
1) I get this message after leaving Xserver
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "base:0" in "remove"
command.

2) While in Xserver no matter which resolution I toggle to
using ctrl-alt-+ I never get the entire desktop to fit into the screen. It looks nice though, but the major problem is that The mouse only has erratic left and right motion. I am using a logitech mouseman+ that works fine in the previous xFree and everywhere else so I think it is settings.

3) When I run Xconfigurator i get
xconfigurator uses obsolete /proc/pci interface
I guessing this is from upgrading the kernel and not upgrading the proc/pci thingy because I didnt know what it is and where to find it.

Any help offereed or suggestions whatsoever is appreciated

if you could post the mouse and video-driver sections of your /etc/XF86Config-4 file, we could help a bit more. also, if you're using the /etc/XF86Config file instead, then make sure that there isn't an XF86Config-4 file in the directory.
the video driver section should look something like this:

Section "Primary-Card"
...(stuff about card name and vendor id)
Driver "tdfx" <- this is the important line
EndSection

also, 2.2.1 is a pretty old kernel version. i think the latest one is 2.4.9. so, needless to say, 2.0.x is pretty old. i've never even had a change to work with it. you should look around to see if you can find anything about migrating from 2.0 to a 2.2 branch. there was probably a change in the pci architecture between those branches.
