unzip .zip >4gb

So I've got this rather annoying problem...

I backed up my $homedir by using zip -R and the resulting file was 4.19gb. That in itself is not a problem, as I just moved it to another machine on my network and reinstalled my distro.

Now though, when I try to unzip said file I am told that the file itself is too large to be unzipped. What puzzles me is, why was I allowed to create a .zip larger than can be unzipped? Any thoughts as to how I can get at that data?

There was a thread around here somewhere about large ZIP files recently.
