Unable to login (no password prompt)

I'm having a problem with my Debian 3.0r0 installation

After the machine has been running for a couple of hours it becomes imposible to login. When I enter a username (root or any other user) I get back to the username prompt. The password prompt never appeares. When trying through ssh it doesn't respons at all.

If I have already logged in locally, that session works fine. When I reboot the machine it works fine again for a couple of hours.
