Question Unable to cd to kernels sub-directory

Good Day,

I am receiving an error anytime I attempt to cd to the below directory path. I can cd to each individual directory but not the whole path.

Regards,
Keith

[root@localhost 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686]# cd /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-686
-bash: cd: /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-686: No such file or directory

I think it's a typo. In one the directory contains an "i686" and in the other is just "686"

Thanks for your post.

Here is my latest output while trying to create a symbolic link.

[root@localhost 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686]# cd /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/asm-i386
[root@localhost asm-i386]# cd /usr/include/asm
[root@localhost asm]# ln -s /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/asm-i386 ./usr/include/asm
ln: creating symbolic link `./usr/include/asm' to `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/asm-i386': No such file or directory

Is the dot in ./usr/include/asm intentional? That would create the link in /usr/include/asm/usr/include/asm. I think you may want to omit the dot.

I will try omitting the (.) but the below example dictates otherwise.

ln -s [TARGET DIRECTORY OR FILE] ./[SHORTCUT]

Removing the (.) allowed me to create my symbolic links. However, why would the Linux manual recommend its use when it fails with a syntax error?

Whose manual is that? There is no central manual for linux. Is this a LFS project? Anyhow, in linux "." means "in the current directory", so the location of something with a dot in it is different, depending on where you are in the filesystem. It may be a typo in that manual, or maybe they intended you to run it from somewhere else in the filesystem.
