Ugly white line under cursor [SOLVED]

I'm suddenly getting a white line about a half inch inch long just underneath my cursor. Recent changes include:

-upgrading from XFCE 4.4 rc3 to final
-upgrading dbus from 0.62 to 1.02
-installing hal 0.5.7.1

I haven't changed my xorg.conf.

I'm running Gentoo current with XFCE 4.4 on an IBM Thinkpad T43 with ATI Mobility X300 64Mb graphics.

Any ideas, anyone? Thanks.

Is it there upon a reboot or logout/login? If you haven't tried that, try to just simply type reset at the console or terminal to see if that clears the line that shouldn't be there.

Yes, the line's still there after a reboot. (As a longtime Windows user, I knew that a reboot often fixes things. It's just that with Linux, it's a last resort; with Windows, it's usually the first thing I try.)

Other ideas.

The only thing I can think of from recent changes was XFCE upgrade but then again, that shouldn't affect your console. Are you sure nothing else was altered?

I didn't explain completely. It's only in an X session that I get the white line, but I get it both in XFCE and in fluxbox.

No, I can't think of anything. I'll probably just live with it in hopes that another update of something-or-other takes care of the problem. It's cosmetic, but annoying nevertheless.

Thanks for thinking.

I finally got rid of my cursor artifact (ugly white line) by ditching the ATI proprietary drivers and installing the opensource ones.

I had to tweak the fonts a little to get them looking good again, but at least I got rid of that annoying line.
