UFS2 assistance

I am trying to reset the root password on a non-running server. The file system is UFS2 (FreeBSD). I know which files to modify. My problem is that when I put the drive into my system (Windows XP), all the software I use to view the drive (R-Linux, etc) mounts the file system as read-only, not enabling me to edit the required file(s). The only linux i use is SLES and Ububtu 7.04. Does anyone have any ideas?
