Ubuntu - xmms buffers when scrolling webpages

Pc Celeron 733mhz, 256 ram running Ubuntu Hoary distribution.

I realise that I don't have the most powerful computer in the world but it shouldn't behave this badly!
When I listen to mp3s or live radio streams on xmms I can barely surf. As soon as I scroll a webpage (or actually any page anywhere) the sound distorts horribly. On my less powerful Windows pc (which I avoid using whenever possible) I don't have these problems at all.
I'm wondering what could be causing this to happen, I am fairly new to Linux so any explanations would need to be quite simple please.

Also vaguely off-topic when I open tabs on any of my browsers, nasty Flash ads show through from the previous page! I've installed Flashblock and Adblock now but it's quite bothersome anyhow.

733 is not all bad, but there are two issues here... If your playing your .mp3's localy, (from the HD) and you get skip then it would be a processor issue, however, if your surfing and downloading streaming content and you get pauses or skipping then it's probably a bandwidth issue...

If I were to test the two I would try to run files locally using several different applications, then try the same streaming content using the same applications and see if it is a processor or bandwith issue...

Also remember that high bandwidth usage also increases CPU access so it complicates things even more...

Do some testing first...

I've found out it is a memory problem. I'm using Epiphany browser which is fairly minimal, it's only when the webpage contains a lot of graphics that my computer can't keep up with the scrolling/graphics resolution.
I notice that it's fine on Google and another forum I visit, but on here it's back to buffer-land. Too many pictures! I'm going to have a go with Firefox and disable all images and hope this cures it.
Thanks for your advice, bandwidth isn't an issue here, it's just the lack of memory.
