Ubuntu VNC server BUG. I can connect but can't control my desktop.

I upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04, or something like that. I had the VNC server started, the one from synaptic manager, but after I completed the upgrade, did reboot to the server, and now when I connect (from my windows machine) with the VNC Viewer, and after I login with the password, I can ONLY view the linux, and I can't drag items, windows, etc. I can't do anything. One friend of mine had THE SAME problem, and I'm sure it's a bug. I have removed the VNC server from synaptic package manager, reinstalled it, and I got the same problem. I have downloaded the 9.04 Ubuntu linux, installed it on a temporary desktop PC, and it had THE SAME problem. Now (after 2 months) I have downloaded again the 9.04 version, from exact place, and the VNC server is working fine.
Now, my question is, how do I fix this problem on my current Ubuntu 9.04 linux server ? 'Cause if I reinstall the VNC server from synaptic manager, it will not change at all, I will still have this problem.
Ofc, on the remote desktop preferences, it is selected "Allow other users to control your desktop". I dezactivated it, activated it again, still can't control the desktop, I can only view it.

Or, is there any other remote desktop program tht I can install to control my X on the linux server from my windows machine ? I don't need X to configure my server, but I need X 'cause I have YM and programs with GUI, torrents, etc.

If i may suggest so, vnc is sick and evil and should be shot. Use something decent like nx (free for admin level usage from nomachine.org, a la windows remote desktop) and you'll have a much much nicer, more secure and more controlled experience.

Ye, but like... I tried to configurate it, and it gives me a headache, I remember I configurated it last year, and it tooked me like... 2 days, or something like that. I don't like the headache so... do you have something else ?

LE: btw, after I configurated last year the NX server, it worked EXTRAORDINARY, fast and good.

Ok, I have installed NX, and it's working, but I have a problem.

I can connect to the desktop, and I can see all the stuff in there, including applications, I can drag and drop, I can open windows, browser, etc. The problem is that I cannot view the current session, for example if I drag a window on the local machine, the window that I dragged I cannot see it while I'm connected with the nx program. I am connecting with NX Win Client with the same unix user that I connect on the local machine, but somehow it's not the same session. If I move a file from left to right, I can see this modification in my local machine desktop, but I don't see my mouse coursor while I'm doing that. It's like a hidden session, but it's the same session.

I want to view the CURRENT session desktop of the user that is logged on the local machine, for example like in old VNC server, or radmin.

Any advice, please ?

LE :

And for example if I want to reboot the linux machine server while I'm logged with NX Win Client, root privileges, it tells me that it will reboot, but it actually wont reboot, and it throws me out, as he actually want to reboot, but the machine itself is not rebooting.

LE:

Let me simplify this a bit, maybe I confuse you guys, and I don't want that.
Thing is, I cannot control the cursor of the mouse from the local server machine, but I can see the desktop of the current logged user. And for example if I launch the Firefox Browser from the local server machine, and then I want to launch the browser again while I'm connected remote with the NX Client, it tells me firefox is already running.

I hope this helps.

LE:

Ok, problem "solved". I am such a nooblet. I needed to use shadow option. :P Now I can control the cursor of the mouse of the local machine server.

Thing is, THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. I have the same problem with the nx server as I have with remote desktop (VNC) !!!
WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS F&*^@NG LINUX DISTRIBUTION ? WHAT'S WRONG ??? (

God da**it, why does it waste my time like this ? :-S It suppose to be simple !!! OMG I'm crying out loud !!!

I will make a short movie with my camera, and I will make a few ss, so you guys can see what the problem is, God da** basterd ubuntu linux, fsss.

I will attach a video on youtube if you guys don't understand what am I saying, but I hope you will udnerstand.

There, I have attached vid on youtube.

I'm not able to see those videos, so I don't understand what problem you really have now, you seem to have said everything you've tried to do, you've now fixed.

How come you are not able to see those videos ? Is there a restriction for your country or what ? What's the error ? Or you have restriction from your work to youtube?
Anyway, you are not obligate ofc to view my link, it's np.
Thing is, I tried alot of things, and the problem still persist. Like I said, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on other PC and the VNC and the NX is working fine. But in my actually server, neither VNC or NX is working. I had the server 9.04 version, and I have upgraded it to 9.10 and all updates, security, blablalbla. Still dosen't work. And I don't know why the NX server dosen't work when I'm sharing the desktop. I mean, it's working VERY GOOD when I'm not chosing the shadow option, but I want to have access in the current desktop of the current username, so I need to use the shadow option while I'm connecting with the NX client from the windows machine.

Try watch those vids again please, if you can.

I know it's a bug, a friend of mine has the same problem.

Lightbulb Yep it's a nomachine bug.

Yep, it's a nomachine bug. In ubuntu 10.04 nomachine doesn't allow you to shadow sessions when desktop visual effects are enabled. Locks up after displaying the remote desktop.

Fix by:
System | Preferences | Appearance | Visual effects | None.

Talking Thank you PHB!

100% success!
I had this problem for a while running the built-in VNC server on Ubuntu 9.10 - it wasn't that serious as my other box sits next to me and has its own screen, but still hoped that upgrading to 10.4 will solve it. After my hopes went down the drain I googled the problem and your post was extremely helpful.

Thank you very much PHB.
