Ubuntu Edgy: fresh install last week, now can't change a load of settings.

Hi, I installed edgy last week, everything has been fine, installed beryl/emerald and things work fine, but today I have lost the ability to change a load of things.

1. I cannot right click and change the "open with" settings. When I right click on an mp3, goto Properties > Open With I can click on say, XMMS and it highlights orange, but the radio button won't change from "Movie Player" which is totem. I can select "Open With" for this instance though from the normal right click menu.

2. It is also the same with tick boxes in "Menu Layout".

3. I couldn't run k3b. ~/.kde/ was showing as access denied when trying to write to it, and that it was owned by root? but after a chmod and chgrp it was OK.

4. I can't shutdown my PC - the option to Shutdown has gone, along with another option I can't remember. I only have Log off, lock screen, switch user, suspend and hibernate. This isn't just my account - I have created a new account and I have the same problem there.

However, the new user can change the "Open With" settings on an mp3 file?

I have no idea what's happening, but I would really appreciate help to make it stop.

Many Thanks,
morrolan
