typing a quotation mark in text editors

I need help with this problem. I recently tried out linux with Mandrake 9.1 and wanted to do my java programming in linux. my problem is that in all the text editors i've tried i have to press the quotation mark button (") twice to get one to come up on the screen and then the text editor doesn't recognise it as a quotation mark.

this means that if i type
String s = "a string";
the string does not get initialised since the qoutation marks are not seen as quotation marks.

is this a problem with my keyboard layout or something else. any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Definitely not a normal thing, but I don't have a clue (aside from your guess about the keyboard possiblity) as to what might be the problem.

Yes, i just fixed it myself. Don't use US Keyboard (International), but Us Keyboard.

Go to The Mandrak Control Centre -> Harware -> Keyboard and select Us KLKeyboard worked for me. Anyhow, fiddle around, the right one may differ for you.
