that's the advanced power management daemon. try running /sbin/modprobe apm, and uncommenting the /sbin/modprobe apm line in your rc.modules file to turn on apm every boot.

in redhat i ever tried two command to shutdown my linux:

1. shutdown -h now

2. halt -n

both the command can be used.

If you want your linux shutdown automatically,
why don't you tried both of the cammand above and see which one can immediatelly turn off the computer after It screen appear word "Power Down" and when you hear the sound "click".

Because i ever used one of them and it turn off the computer immediatelly, but i forget which one, coz i am very seldom to shutdown my linux box, i am just rebooting the linux box.

Hope this can help you

Try this for shutting down (as root):

modprobe apm
poweroff

Actually the modprobe apm bit can be inserted in your rc.d entries... but Red Hat uses SysV-style inits which I am not familiar with. Maybe someone else can help u with that.

Cheers
