Trying to customise K Menu

Hi,

I an running SuSE 8.1 and KDE 3.0.5. I am trying to cusomise my KDE menu.

I've tried two methods, both from the KDE documentation.

First, I run kappfinder. This seems to work fine, picking up apps, but it doesn't
add them to the K menu. I also run K Menu from the system-->tools-->kmenu option.

K Menu comes up OK, but the list of sub-menus and apps on the left hand side of the panel
has only a passing similarity to my real K Menu, and editing it makes no difference at
all to my real K Menu.

Can anyone help me customise my menu.

Iain.

Don't know what to tell you, it works for me. A couple things to keep in mind:
1) be sure that you 'apply' everything, and save your changes
2) both kappfinder and kmenu editor only make changes to the user's menu whom made the changes :: user 'bob' making these changes will only apply to 'bob's kmenu

Thanks for the ideas Bulliver. Unfortunately I was using apply and doing it for my own user ID and it doesn't work for me.

Can anyone tell me which files are involved. There must be a file in my home directory which holds my customised K Menu setup (which I could edit with vi in principle). Does anyone know which file(s) that is? Maybe there's some funny permissions issue or something like that.

More information :

I found that the files that appear in kmenuedit are globally in /opt/kde3/share/applnk. I created a new file and that appeared in kmenuedit. It looks like kmenuedit is correctly picking up the information from these files (and any local overrides in my home directory). For some reason, the actual K-Menu does not bear much relation to this though. I'm not sure where the K-Menu is picking up its information from - must be somewhere.

For example, on the KMenu menu bar, under applications, I have one app - Opera. On kmenuedit under applications I have just "korganiser".

In /opt/kde3/share/applnk/Applications the only file is korganiser.desktop. In $HOME/.kde/share/applnk there is no Applications subdirectory, nor is there one in $HOME/.kde2/share/applnk (not sure why I have these 2 subdirs and no .kde3 dir, but doubtless there is a good reason).

The solution :

Managed to fix the problem.

In SuSE 8.1 there is a Menu Settings panel under the Control Panel. In this you can choose between "SuSE Menu" and "Standard KDE Menu". I had the SuSE Menu selected, which must pick up the menu settings from somewhere different. I switched to "Standard KDE Menu" and it now looks right.
