Trying to connect to shared drive in windows environment with Fedora 8
 

Hello, I am currently running Fedora 8 on my laptop since I am in a Linux class right now and am attempting to connect to my workplace's server so I can access 2 hard drives. I am running a Cat 5 cable from my laptop to a switch in my office and I have tried to connect under Places>Connect to server but I keep getting an error when I put in my workplace's Domain and my username/password. I have tried connecting using SSH and Windows Share but just keep getting an error saying "could not connect to server".

However, when I hit browse, I do see the shared printer and a "Windows Network" icon.

I am logged in as the root user

Anyone have any insights?

Silly question perhaps, but are you putting in your Windows user name and password? Also, the windows server may be setup to only show file shares to machines in active directory, in which case your linux laptop may need to be joined to the domain.

I have an account in the active directory for the windows side, yes. Thats the only information I have to log into the domain to use the resources so I was putting the windows logon credentials into the server connection utility,

Ok, well active directory uses a kerberos system to authenticate both the machine and the user, so you would have to join the linux machine to the domain in order to utilise the resources within the windows domain. Take a look at this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ectory-371848/

and that class requires you to use a UNSUPPORTED version of Fedora ????

not understanding what you're asking here...as in no support desk? the point of the class is to learn the basics of linux....

Right...the latest Fedora is 11, 12 will be out soon. Fedora 8 is very old, and if you need to learn the basics, it'd probably be a good idea to use something that has the latest versions of everything. The 'basics' have changed and/or updated since FC8.
