troubleshooting total lock-ups

Recently I'm getting total lockups after a few minutes of running 3d games like Nexuiz or Warcraft. Everything freezes, mouse doesn't move, a few millisecons of sound are repeating - like playing a scratched cd.
I'm on Ubuntu 7.10 (beta) so I'm really expecting trouble.

Are there any scripts I could be looking for, hoping that something went wrong before the lockup? Just now I thought I could let it write the progs output to a testfile, since its reproducible.
I'm not expecting that it's a hardware error. It appeared right after the last kernel update. But anyway - I'm not that much interested in this particular case, rather than what you look for when that happens.
