Trouble with Ubuntu 10.04

Hello,
I'm new to linux and jusr recently updated my computer from Ubuntu 9.1 to 10.04 and now my computer won't turn on all the way. When I turn it on the "In touch with tomorrow- Thosiba" thing pops up like normal. Then a white underscore pops up blinks then Ubuntu ... pops up and flashes away leaving my computer screen black. how can I fix this?

After Toshiba and before Ubuntu should come Grub2. You should be given a choice of kernels to boot for about 5 seconds. Select one that says Recovery or Single User or Safe.

the problem is that right after ubuntu nothing else pops up.

oh ok. The but that doesn't happen. It's just a white underscore that blinks a few times then quits.
