trouble starting pppd

I've made much headway considering the complexity of getting the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem to work.

I've gotten everything to the point where Linux recognizes the modem and all that (I'm using PPPoA) but when I go to run "pppd" I get errors like the following my in log:

Nov 25 20:02:35 localhost pppd[3829]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Nov 25 20:02:35 localhost pppd[3829]: Using interface ppp1
Nov 25 20:02:35 localhost pppd[3829]: Connect: ppp1 <--> /dev/pts/1
Nov 25 20:02:35 localhost /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp1 is already up

I don't know if that's helpful or not, but that's what happens. I am still not able to connect using the SpeedTouch.

Hi
I'm now having the same problem, did you manage to find the solution? My system does try to connect, but then seems to timeout with message LCP: timeout sending config requests.

None of this looks like the messages in the howto. Do you have any idea what the replies are asking for??

Is it USB?

do this

cat "/proc/net/atm/Alcatel SpeedTouch USB:0"

you should get something like this

Speed Touch USB:0 (00:90:0d:xx:xx:xx)
AAL0: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop )
AAL5: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop )

if not then maybe you need to build the kernel module for it.

here is the howto you will need

http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html

Been there done that, pulled hair out etc!
My ISP won't say whats at the other end, or help in any way, I searched on proto 0xfefe and came up with some cisco switch docs, sounds reasonable, but its also been suggested this is trying to do pppoe, which ISP confirm it is not. I guess I'll have to continue with this Win proxy for now. I've posted this problem in networking too, maybe a network guru will come along and save the day!

If it's USB, maybe you can talk them into swapping out for an ethernet modem.

Sadly their attitude is that it works under windoze and everything else is my fault. Might have to BUY an ethernet modem as well.

It works!
It was the fact my ISP uses LLC encapsulation, not what everyone else does (can't recall its name). Had to put llc-encaps in the /etc/ppp/options file, but had to be AFTER the pppoatm plugin line.
Now to get on with the career threatening project.
