trivial newbie-level login question (Red Hat)
 

What would be the most appropriate file to place startup commands for when I login to a Red Hat 8/9 system?

I.e. i want to start gkrellm, galeon, gaim, and evolution everytime I login to Gnome.

Should I use my .xinitrc? .bashrc? a .gnome file? I know you can probably find a RH gui tool to do this but I'd like to know the appropriate file. There are probably many ways to do it but I'd like to know the "most correct" way.

Believe (correct me if i'm wrong) the .gnome file would be what you want, because you sayed "when i log into gnome..."

Thanks for the input. I agree, the most appropriate thing I am looking for is probably a gnome file since I use gnome for my login manager. I'd like to know which gnome file I should edit then for this purpose.
~/.gnome is actually a directory for gnome (1.x series?) confuration files... I woudln't know which one to edit.

I just found in RH9's Red Hat Menu -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Sessions, you can add programs to start up. Then I grep'd in .gnome2/ directory and found that information stored in ~/.gnome2/sessions-manual file in a special format.

I like knowing that.

However, I think I would like to know where should I place commands if I want them to start up regardless of Desktop manager... I'd like to know which file to most appropriately use that would work for KDE or Gnome or just starting X... Anybody know?

if you just save your session with those apps open won't they automatically open?
