transparantly compress files on ext3

Hi,

I'm using the maildir format for my mailbox. But since I like to keep all my mails I tought about compressing them. One way to do it is tar.bz2 them. however, I can't access them via IMAP anymore.

Is there a way to save a file compressed on disk on an ext3 fs? something similar to the compression in NTFS.

If not on ext3, anything else? (preferably WITH quota support)

it might.... I'm not sure how I can implement it into my IMAP maildir structure...

Since the IMAP server always loads {dir}/cur/ and not {dir}/cur#/
