You need to install gstreamer and the gstreamer-devel package using urpmi/rpmdrake.

Newer versions of totem need a package called gstreamer. This program is used by totem as its media playing backend. You can probably find it in you distro's package database, or you can compile from source from http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/. And make sure you get the plugins package too--it has practically any codec you'll need. BTW, you also need Gnome 2.10 to install totem 0.101, but I've gotten 0.100 working decently with gnome 2.8

Good luck

Hi,
Why didn't you try URPMI, it takes care of all the dependencies !
If you haven't, set it up by going to easyurpmi.zarb.org : everything
is explained, then you won't have any dependencies hell like this
one any longer. Why installing with tarballs whereas this method
saves you all the hassle ?

Hope that helps

Cheers

I downloaded the 'gstream' and decompressed; it worked fine.

Even the ./configure command worked beautifully.
However, the make commands didn't work

Configure didn't work fine. There was yet another missing package from your system. Look closely at your output, and you'll notice this:

Code:
configure: error: popt 1.6.3 or newer is required to build gstreamer. You can
download the latest version from
ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/
Download and install the popt package. You probably should get it from rpmdrake, or whatever it's called (I don't use Mandrake, so I'm not sure) to save you the trouble.

I downloaded the 'popt' . It was a RPM file. I installed it successfully
popt-1.8-1.i386.rpm

I can't use either the 'make or make install' command.
What is the problem?

Why are you dowloading dependencies instead of installing them with urpmi? urpmi make package managment on Mandrake easier so you don't have to do a lot of compiling. Take a look at zebulon.org.uk for information about urpmi and easyurpmi for instructions on how to set it up. To install totem, you would just do as root
Code:
#urpmi totem
Totem will then be installed including all its dependecies.

That is exactly what I suggested above, but our friend here seems to enjoy problems.
He hasn't even tried this solution...

I tried again. The following is the result. What is the meaning of it?

[root@c83-250-88-143 ka]# urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/Mand.../media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz
unable to take medium "Updates for Mandrakelinux 10.0 (ftp1u)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Updates for Mandrakelinux 10.0 (ftp1u)] exists
added medium contrib
urpmi database locked
[root@c83-250-88-143 ka]#

Do "urpmi.removemedia -a" and then redo the setup process for urpmi using the French or German mirrors, I find that they are more reliable than the rest in Europe.

Try doing "rpm --rebuilddb" as root and thenrun the urpmi setup process. It seems you have a repository that was misconfigured and can't be removed.

I did what you suggested. Is it fine?
Shall I go ahead with the 'urpmi' process now?

[root@c83-250-88-143 ka]# rpm --rebuilddb
[root@c83-250-88-143 ka]#
