Question tmpfs and ramfs

I have a question about tmpfs and ramfs. They seem to be quite equal in the sense that they keep everything in memory and doesn't save anything to the harddrive. I think I've read that tmpfs was created from ramfs so my question is; are they both needed in a "generic" x86 2.6.* kernel and what are they used for?
