Time server needed to sync clock, CDT
 

Hello

I currently have fluxbox (and nothing else) on my system.

It however shows the wrong time.

I know there are probably many threads that talk about cpu overclocking and stuff like that, but my problem is not that. My problem is simply that the time is not set to CDT and instead to some other zone.
Basically there is a cron job that automatically syncs the clock with UTC time. That is annoying, since when rebooting there is a script that synces hardware clock with system time and my CMOS time too gets screwed up after that. What I then have to do is boot into Windows, synchronize it for CDT and so on.

Even if I try to run ntpdate to what server should I sync my clock? I want it to sync with a CDT time and not the UTC time.

The 'normal' thing with linux (and unix in general) is to have the system clock set to UTC. My understanding is that all NTP servers are set to UTC. That's why it' called Universal Coordinated Time (:) in French anyway).

Then you set your local timezone as part of configuring your machine, and UTC is converted to correct local time for time/date display. For Debian based systems there is a good description of what happens at:

I believe you can also set the system clock to local time, but I don't know if things like NTP and auto daylight-saving still work.

Later -- there is a line 'UTC' in file /etc/adjtime on my Debian setup which I think determines that the system is based on UTC. There should be some sort of configuration tool to safely change the setting but I don't know what it is.

I guess that was just the way I needed.. I have gone over the entire Debian Reference manual, but not the System Administrator's Guide. I will RTFM that immediately !!
