Thinking about a dual-boot system...

Hello all you Linux people out there! I'm something you may find alot around here! Yup, you guessed it! A !

Well, I was considering to dual boot Windows XP with Kubuntu, SUSE, or Fedora.
CONSIDERING! That doesnt mean I'm going to do it! (You have to convince me first!). Anyway, here are the system specs!

Abit NF7-S v2
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (L3 Mod so the mobo picks it up as a 3000+) (overclocked to 2.2ghz)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT (AGP) (Has VIVO as well. I hear VIVO works well in Linux).
1gb (2 x 512mb) Corsair TwinX DDR400
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Maxtor 80gb HD (will be using an ATA 133 to SATA converter when I get my sys up and running).
Seagate HD (probably will replace into my Linux server)
Might buy a 200gb SATA drive in the near future.

Now, what kind of system would this be to setup in Linux? I would have to install the nForce 2 drivers, the gfx drivers, blah blah you guys know what I'm talking about. Also, what distro would run best on it? Thanks!

I'd like to make my way into the "wonderful world of Linux" as many of you put it. Only, Linux has been troublesome to me at first. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Terribly sorry for the double post, but, lets say I wanted to remove Linux. Say, I wanted every portion of it removed, the bootloader, just as if it would boot normally into Windows before I even installed Linux. How would I do that?

It is dead easy to play around with Linux and you can remove it any time without a trace. The bit that actually gets inside a Windows partition is the boot loader. You don't remove a Linux boot loader in the MBR. You overwrite it with a Windows version which can be done as frequent as you wish, using either a Windows installation CD or just a bootable DOS floppy.

I found your approach to dual booting funny.

My box has 2 DOS, 3 Windows, a BSD, a Solaris and over 40 Linux booted by one Linux boot loader and yet you are nervous about booting just 2 systems and only prepared to go as far as thinking about it.

not too sure how your various hardware will do, but why not try a multi-boot and just see which ones you like best? I have my hard drive partitioned into 14 partitions and I have 8 or so distros at any given time. It's really easy to do and you can just see what works best, you don't have to take our word for it. here's a good how-to: http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20040614

If you want to remove linux completely, all you need is a Windows 98 boot disk. There is a tool on there to return your MBR to just windows.

You can browse the HCL here on LQ.org, for example, to find out if your hardware is supported in Linux. You will also probably find such lists on the websites of the distros you listed. Good luck with it.
