Question Theoretical test enviroment

Ok, this is all just a thought I had. Due to not always knowing what I'm doing i something screw things up to the point the only why I know how to fix it is to reinstall. Luckily I have learnt the things I need to back up before I do this. However...

Would it be possible to create a partition on a drive and simlink all files from my system and be able to boot in to the symlink version. Here I would replace symlinks with actual files when I want to modify something, if it does not work, just run a shell script to refreash all the link back to my real system. If it worked I would kown it is fine to apply the changes to the real system.

What do people think about this?

No need for restores if you boot a LiveCD like KNOPPIX or create your own Mandrake LiveCD with mklivecd and boot it using Qemu.
