Question The Sis 730 being detected as a 630

I recently installed RH 7.0 and was unable to get my video cad to work with it (SiS 730). I then installed RH 7.1 and got the card to work as a SiS 630 but i cant change resolution 640 X 480 and everything looks pretty bad 256 color. note: the SiS 730 was not an option on the install for possible video cards. I have tried searching the web for some kind of driver for the card and havent found one links dead or in japanese. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even if you find the driver in tarball, do you know how to compile and install it? That's the question.

My recommendation would be install the driver from the distro. You can log in as root and hit ALT-F2 to go text mode, then run "xf86config" or "XF86Setup". It's not as easy as reinstall. Another way is run your RH hardware setup. I'm on Mandy so I don't know what or where it is.

BTW, during install, you configure X and that's where you get to pick your video.

Aight Im new to linux but I am sure i can install the tarball it would just take me a while to figue it out. But as far as going back into the Xconfig to change the Setting to SiS 730 I cant do that SiS 730 is not listed in the menu I guess not supported whne redhat 7.1 came out. Im just wondering if anyone has got it to work and work right, and if so HOW?

Hi, I also got a Sis730. It is never detected because there is no driver for the 730 in xfree86.
I use the Sis630 driver instead. How it works with a new installation
depends a lot on the distro and the monitor you use - the only distro that worked right out of the box for me was connectiva.
Can you change the resolution and colordepth at all?
Was the monitor detected ok?
On my suse the installer uses another driver for the card that doesnt support to change the res or color of the monitor.
So first of all you need to make shure that you got the Sis630 driver loaded.
If you cant get things to work right then the settings for the screen might be screwed up.
