Question The same font and it's size differs from Windows to Linux. How to solve it ?

Hi all,

We have a java desktop application (j2se) that runs both on Windows and Linux. The standard font that has been used is Arial (size 11). In Windows all components fits well on screen, but we can see some differences when it runs on Linux. Well, what I can see is that on Linux the font ratio differs from Windows, and it makes font bigger than what is shown in Windows.

The result is that it harms component alignment on screen.

I don't know if I could be clear on my explanation.

Thanks for any help !

The difference is usually in the DPI (dots per inch) configuration in the screen resolution. The resolution of a screen is not enough to determine the mapping to an absolute size for a font (72 points/inch). The additional information, DPI, provides the missing piece.

Depending on your distribution, video card driver and desktop environment, the DPI setting can be changed in several places. In current Gnome for example, you can set it by going to menu System->Preferences->Fonts, click on the Details button, and the DPI setting will be available at the top of the dialog.

Keep in mind that your Windows setting may be wrong too!
