The last questions b4 I gonna install Linux
 

Let's face it.. I'm a n00b. Everything you reply with here, should be said so that even your 3 years old daughter who knows nothing about computers would be able to understand it ;)

I looked at Lycoris ( b4 known as Redmond ) and asked here if that was worth a try, and was actually told to smack those who suggested it. Is the opinions about Lycoris still the same ? I have to say that their GUI looks great ( except that stupid bar which all Linux distro's seems to have ).. and.. well.. I know that GUI just is something, but I'm weak when I see something which looks great.. I just have to have it. Though if it's to bugged, I wouldn't dream of installing it... ppl here said it was, so... well is the opinion the same ?

Ok... due to the opitions said by many of the skilled ppl here, I decieded to use ( that is, IF the opinions about Lycoris hasn't chanced ) Mandrake as my first try.

There's a few thing which I need to get straight though. And here I ask you to remember the stuff about me being a n00b.

I'm going to download the Mandrake 8,2 RC 1 and install that.
But when that's done I need to:

1) Setup a internet connection, so that I can get at the net as fast as possible.

2) Get Wine ( is WineX a part of Mandrake 8,2 ?? Anybody who knows ? ) compiled, so it can be used. I know it's not the best, but it's said to run Baldur's Gate 2, and that's ALL I'm using.

3) Find a good IRC chat to Linux. Any who have a good URL ?

4) Learn to use the GCC compiler-thingie. Especially where I have to click to load it up, and run it.

5) Get other good stuff, so that I can make it all good looking and user-friendly. ;)

I would appriciate if somebody could give a good Step-By-Step guide to my above stuff. I know it will tale long.... perhaps ages to answer in a good step by step way, but think about it.. you'll be able to sticky this topic at the board ;) and save allot of time when the next n00b pop's out and ask the same (probably stupid ) questions.

Ow.. I saw that you could have Wine start when you boot. Is that something which it does automaticly when it' installed.

1. Mandy 8.1 will auto detect a DHCP connection. 8.2 will probably do the same. What kind of hardware setup are you behind?

2. I've never used a Windows app emulator. Sorry.

3. I think Mandy comes with an IRC client.

4. Just play around with it. Best way to learn anything.

5. www.rpmfind.com will be your best friend.

I'm using a ADSL (DSL, right ? ) connection. Connected thru a Router ( Cisco 677 ). Is that what you mean ?

About the GCC. I'll be nice to know what command to type and what the coammds in the command actually mean ;)

Router, I'm not sure if you'll need anything extra for your DSL. All I needed to do for my cable is setup DHCP. Mandy autodetected the rest.

GCC? I thought you were talking about the C compiler that Linux ships with.

where to click? heh, i think you've a fair bit to learn once you get going ;) console forever

It might well be the one I mean. All I have been told is that there's a compiler which I have to use to compile most ( if not all ) of the programs in the linux packs. Including Wine.

Hmm.. Bet I have to wait with the installing until someone who knows about ADSL connections thru Linux comes around ;)

No, there's nothing you need to do when you're behind a router.

I'm behind a firewall router. It'll take care of everything. When installing Linux, tell it to auto-detect (LAN) then click "DHCP", then you're all set. As soon as an app starts to use the Web, the router reaches out. There.

Btw: I would have dl'ed the RC1, but I can only find the so-called BETA at their dl section. Have they simply forgot to update that part of the page or what ? I don't want to dl a beta.. I have never had big success with such stuff.

Reminds me: The AutoUpdater.. does that automatickly update the BETA's to RC1 and RC1 to 2 etc etc.

Mandrake 8 asked for password and such under DHCP... I didn't have such.. or atleast I didn't have to write a pass in windows. Can that field be left blanc in 8,1 ( 8,2 rc1 ) ?

Mandrake 8.2 IS still in beta... RC1 means release candidate 1... it's still in testing.

I would go ahead and get Mandrake 8.1 for now and upgrade when 8.2 is available.

Wine comes pre-packaged with Mandrake, but you will have to configure it for your system.

Are you asking about GCC because you want to be able to install software that you download from the 'net? If so, just stick to getting RPMs instead. They are painless to install under Mandrake (and Redhat).

As a newbie, I would suggest you use KDE for your window manager. It is the easiest to setup and use IMO.

Ok.. I'll take your advice and get 8,1.

But how would you configure it. I mean.. don't you have to use the GCC to compile it (wine)? And what after that ?

i'd say until you actually know what questions to ask, to not really ask... i'm afraid to say your question is borderline gibberish... :D you're unlikely to ever have to care about gcc in the slighest, unless you want to write software.

also click the link on my sig for some on line manuals to answer simple questions...

No need to use GCC at all unless you are writting C/C++ programs. Wine comes pre-installed, you just have to tailor it to your setup in the wine.config. I think there is a script that comes with Wine (wine-config maybe?) that will help. I don't really use it much because I like to seperate myself from Windoze as much as possible.

Acid_Kewpie... I know that n00bs like me is annoying ( I myself am a moderator at anoter huge board ( TeamBG ), and deals with many n00bs there all the time ), but I think the best way to learn is to ask. Don't you agree ?

Ok.. so i'm not gonna use the GCC. But setup Wine ( and other programs in some otherway )

Still I have to ask; HOW to you setup Wine, then ?
And is my idea about Wine correct.. that you can just insert the program you want, and it'll ,ore or less work ?

look, i'm not being offensive or anything, but why bother asking how to install wine when you've never even USED linux before? look for information and when you get to something you are unsure about THEN ask a specific question. and please.. it's not "the GCC" it's just plain gcc.

I reckon that one day i'll need to change the brake pads on my car, but i'm not gonna ask how to do it until i've at least found out where the things are and seen what they look like.

and as for your faith in wine... i can't stand the program it'll run a number of things, but to get it working nicely with as many apps as possible will likely to take a LOT of fiddling with, wine has a LOT of thigns to fiddle with in the conf files. that'll probably be seen as a bit of a pessimistic outlook, but you'll get much better results in general from wine when you can troubleshoot tiny little things yourself.

[additional metaphor from my girlfriend: you should at least have tried a pie to find out what it tastes like before you try and make it taste better...]

heh.. I understand you perfect.

I have tried Linux before.. but not as I want to this time. My idea is to ( in a matter of minutes actually ) to start install Linux Mandrake 8.1. But please note, that last time I installed Mandrake 8.0, I couldn't figure out how to conect to the net.. heh sounds dumb, but it's true.
That's why I this time has decieded to ask allot of questions, so that i atleast have a possibility to get online.

I heard much bad about Wine... and I do doub it's as good as all say, but as I said above.. if it can run BG2.. I'm totally happy.

Anyway.. b4 I end up getting dished and whatever, I'll stop posting more questions ( atleast for today ;) ), and get Mandrake installed.
