the Knoppix HD installation

Has Knoppix evolved beyond a liveCD yet? The last I heard, the HD installation proper was still being developed.

Not sure I understand the question. Knoppix runs as a liveCD. And it is installable from the liveCD.

Knoppix always had an installer--it was sort of hidden and they recommended NOT installing Knoppix, but rather Debian. Why not grab the latest version and see what it says?

I would, because it was the first Linux distro I used and I'm sentimentally attached to it. But there was always what Pixellany says--that Knoppix users claimed it wasn't designed for HD installation. More recently, though, I heard someone saying that that's being improved on.

Ace, I strongly think MEPIS belongs on your list of newbie distros. And I disagree with your putting DSL on it, for one reason: Fluxbox. I'm basically a newbie, and I find Fluxbox slightly harder to figure out than KDE.

Based on my observations from problems reported by newbies after installing Knoppix on the hard drive, you will regret it if you do.
