Why would you want to zip them? Anyway, to zip a file:

Code:
zip newzipfile.zip file1.txt file2.jpg file3.png (usw...)
This would create the new zipfile newzipfile.zip containing file1.txt and file2.jpg and file3.png...

I just want to know how it works in Linux. I know how it works in Windows.

It worked fine. I just zipped two files. They are ASCII based files. After the completion of zipping, the original file were still there. It was my understanding that they will be in the newly created zip file.

However, it was still there. Is that the way it works?

You are zipping to compress and get some space; I mean this is the general idea of zipping files.

Yes, that's the way it works with zip, the original files remain.
