The damn thing won't boot

I'm trying to install mandrake 9 on my old computer, but the thing won't boot. I get the screen where i choose my installation. I select Linux and hit enter, the screen goes blask and the damn thing just stops.

I have a
Intel Celeron 300
Davicom NIC
3com 509b ISA NIC
Nvidia Geforce2 400 64MB PCI
256 RAM
24x CDRom
Dell ES17 monitor

Num Lock turns on and off just fine.
I don't receive any reply when i try to ping.

Any idea what might be wrong?

sounds like the kernel may not support the console. While in a prepackaged kernel this should not be the case that's the only thing I can think of to explain the behavior. There was time then I was compiling my own kernel and I removed its console capabilities... that's pretty much what happened.

I'm not familiar with Mandrake too well these days. Does it give you an opportunity to choose what type of kernel to install?

Have you tried other distros?
